Aflaki powers Battlefield past overmatched Devilettes
Sahar Aflaki lit up the Culpeper defense on Monday evening, as she pounded home four goals to help advance the Battlefield girls’ soccer team into the semifinals of the Cedar Run District tournament. The Bobcats dominated visiting CCHS, 8-1.The eighth-seeded Devilettes struggled to contain first-place Battlefield, allowing three goals by three different Bobcat players in the first five minutes of the game.
Jessica Jewell attached her name to five of Battlefield’s points as she scored two goals and made three assists.
“They didn’t have that much depth, defensively,” Bobcat coach Kevin Hilton said of Culpeper. “And if you give our forwards 35, 40 yards behind them, they’ve got a lot of speed. They’re going to get in behind. They’re going to take on and beat most defenders just because they have so much pace.”
Culpeper only took two shots all game while Battlefield fired more than 20. That came in large part due to the Devilettes losing a majority of 50-50 balls against Battlefield middles like Ali Schumacher, who Hilton credited with “setting the pace at midfield.
“I think our midfield did a real nice job of owning the midfield,” said Hilton. “So they weren’t able to build up any attacks.”
Sarah Retz had the lone goal for Culpeper, whose season concluded with the loss.
