Yowell deadline looms

Will Yowell open by the first day of school, or will it remain unfinished? School officials have until July 15 to find out.

That's when they'll have to start moving equipment. Where they'll move it remains uncertain.

"We're at a point where I won't have to make a final decision until July 15," schools Construction projects Manager Hunter Spencer said. "But by July 15, I'll need to move furniture."

The building itself has advanced well, Spencer added. But the officials still have "some questions over whether site work for the building can be completed in time. In particular, delays have been caused by the extra care needed in avoiding the water and sewer lines already underneath the project's busy Route 522 site.

Delays in steel delivery originally hindered the $14.4 million project. That delay first forced Superintendent David Cox to prepare back-up plans in case Yowell remained unfinished by the first day of school.

Under Cox's plan, Yowell students would occupy vacant classrooms in Culpeper Middle School and the various elementary schools until Yowell opens. Spencer also mentioned that Yowell principal Cathy Timmons has been discussing possibilities with a parent-advisory group.

Cox said that those elementary students would remain with the same teacher and classmates through the year, regardless of which school they started in.
