Culpeper Police Investigating Fatal House Fire

The victims of the Wednesday night fatal house fire in the 200-block of Wolford Street have been identified as:

Ismelda Elizabeth Garcia Mena, 35, of Culpeper, Virginia

Genesis Cadisha Rivera Garcia, 4, of Culpeper, Virginia

The male victim who was transported from the scene by EMS to Novant-UVA Culpeper Medical Center shortly after the fire has been transferred to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. The male victim’s condition is still unknown.

A Culpeper police officer was also treated at Novant-UVA Culpeper Medical Center for smoke inhalation following this incident, but was released after receiving treatment.

On October 26, 2016 at approximately 10:45pm, officers with the Culpeper Police Department responded to the area of the 200 block of Wolford St. to assist the fire departments with a reported house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters and officers found the residence to be fully engulfed.

An adult female victim was located in the residence and pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim who was a child was located and transported to Novant-UVA Culpeper Medical Center. Life saving measures were attempted on the child victim, but this victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital a short time later. A male victim was transported from the scene by EMS and his condition is unknown at this time.

Traffic in the area of Orange Road and Wolford Street was blocked for much of the morning, but has since be re-opened.

Once the fire department extinguished the fire, Culpeper Police detectives were called to the scene to begin investigating this incident. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations is assisting Culpeper Police with this investigation. Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office assisted with this incident.

The identities of both victims is being withheld at this time until the next of kin can be properly notified.
