Culpeper woman killed while trying to help

A 20-year-old Culpeper woman was killed Friday morning after riding on a king-size mattress, which was unsecured on the top of a 2006 Chevrolet Express Van in Haymarket.

The incident happened at Bent Grass Drive and Waverly Farm Drive at 6:42 a.m.

The victim, identified as Sidney Zelaya Gonzalez, was riding on top of the van trying to hold down the mattress, which she was helping move a short distance, said Prince William police spokesman Nathan Probus.

The mattress had been placed on top of a ladder rack, he said.

The mattress and Gonzalez both fell off as the van traveled north on Waverly Farm Drive just south of Bent Grass Drive. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident, Probus said. The van’s driver is a 41-year-old Culpeper woman. Charges are pending.
