Upgrades along Rt. 229 starting Thursday

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane controlled by flagging on Duke Street at the intersection of Route 229 (North Main Street) in the town of Culpeper for water-line installation work overnight Sept. 1.

Weather permitting, the work will occur between 4 p.m. and 5 a.m. Motorists should remain alert for and obey all traffic controls while traveling through the work zone.

During this overnight work, properties in the area will have a temporary disruption to their water service. Property owners impacted will be notified in advance of the work.

The utility upgrades are part of the town of Culpeper’s Route 229 widening project, which has an estimated completion date of August 2017. Under a $6.66 million contract, the project will widen a 0.8-mile section of Route 229 to a four-lane undivided highway, improve right- and left-turn lanes where warranted, replace the traffic signal at Grandview Avenue and construct a shared-use path on the east side of the road and a sidewalk on the west side. More information about the project is available at www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/rt229widening.asp.
