Culpeper Police seek stabbing suspect

On July 22, 2016, at around 2:30am, the Culpeper Police Department received a call for a report of a stabbing on the 2000 Block of Birch Drive. Officers immediately responded to the area. They determined the stabbing occurred inside a residence, that the suspect gained entry into. Officers located one 42 year old male victim who had been stabbed. Culpeper County EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center. Once at the hospital the victim received treatment, before being transported to the UVA Charlottesville Hospital for further treatment.

After conducting an initial investigation officers requested assistance from detectives assigned to the Culpeper Police Department Criminal Investigative Section. Detectives arrived on scene and proceeded to process the scene. They collected physical evidence related to the incident.

The suspect is identified as Derrick Lamont Willis, 37, of the 500 Block of Meadowbrook Drive in Culpeper. Willis fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival. He is at present wanted for one felony, malicious wounding. Additional charges may be place in the future. Currently, the U.S. Marshal Service is actively assisting the Culpeper Police Department in locating Willis.

Chief Chris Jenkins reminds residents, “If you see something, say something.” He adds that based on the preliminary incident this incident appears to be an isolated incident.
