Relay for Life fights for a cancer cure

“Culpeper is doing excellent! We came up with a sure fire plan this year to be successful and we are right on the mark,” says Christina Ballard, South Atlantic Community Manager for Relay for Life. Ballard, with several family members who have battled cancer, coordinates the Relay for Life efforts and events in Culpeper, Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties.

To date, Culpeper has 52 teams, 582 registered participants and they have raised $147,653.75.

“I know they are out there,” stresses Ballard who would like more cancer survivors to sign up for the annual event which typically draws several thousand. “I want the public to know that this is a free community event,” says Ballard who encourages anyone and everyone to come out and support those participating as well as join in the effort to erase cancer from its devastating effects on victims and their families. While slated as an overnight event, it’s not necessary to spend the night.

“Come for a little while and enjoy the fun,” says Ballard.

Upcoming events include:

June 2: Team Captain meeting held at the Culpeper County Library from 5-7 p.m. T-Shirt pick up/questions and answers, come and go

June 3: Survivor Dinner and Relay starting at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Eastern View High School. Each survivor may come with one guest to the dinner and register for the Relay.

June 4: Opening ceremonies and survivor celebration at Relay for Life at 11 a.m. at Eastern View High School. Luminaria Ceremony begins at 9 p.m. Closing ceremonies at 7 a.m.
