In business for two decades, Sherbeyn’s Landscape has called Culpeper home for the past 10 years. During that time, they’ve stayed true to their motto – “your dreams, our creations.”

In January of this year, owner Donald Sherbeyn earned kudos as his team received the Eagle Bay Hardscape Hero award for a project that started as a patio, but as the owner’s dream blossomed, so did the project.

Sherbeyn smiles.

“It was going to be a patio and then a fire pit was added, fencing for the dogs, and then an outdoor kitchen,” says Sherbeyn of the eventual creative and lavish space created for Bob McCall, a retired dentist living in Culpeper.

Sherbeyn relies on AB Kearns, another family-owned and longtime Culpeper fixture, for much of his stones. A Virginia company, Eagle Bay products are used in many of the patios built in Culpeper and with AB Kearns as the supplier, they shared recognition in the award as well.

“This award is a pretty big deal,” says Sherbeyn noting that only one winner is chosen each month. At the end of the year there will be another competition among the monthly winners for best of the year.

Sherbeyn’s start in the business had a rough start. At 17, he wanted to go into the Marines like his father, Lee Sherbeyn, had done before him. But attempting to move a very large mound of dirt proved too much for his youthful enthusiasm.

“I blew out the sides of my stomach,” says Sherbeyn which ended his dreams of entering the military. However, it did get him started in his father’s construction business and eventually into lawn and landscape work, a career that he finds satisfying and rewarding.

“There’s no cap…no limit on where you can go with this,” says Sherbeyn of the hard work, dedication to service and quality that has garnered him a solid place in the area’s business landscape.

Not venturing often to Northern Virginia for work, Sherbeyn enjoys working in and around Culpeper.

“It’s become home and it’s seldom that you don’t go someplace and see somebody that you know…lots of good folks here.”

Sherbeyn and his wife Michelle are raising three children and when he does have some free time it’s spent on sports fields coaching softball, baseball or soccer.

He also puts a lot of faith in his crew. “We keep them through the winter,” says Sherbeyn, “we rely on them and they deserve that.”

Through the years, Sherbeyn has been responsible for many patios, walkways, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, decks and other landscape features to make your home a sanctuary. Ponds and water features are among his favorites to install.

Standing outside their building in Culpeper, Sherbeyn looks to a large stone fountain, the water gently cascading into a deep pool complete with fish.

“I love doing fountains,” smiles Sherbeyn…so many ways that the water can flow depending on your property.”

Sherbeyn’s landscaping design talents stem from a love of the outdoors and what is possible when you partner the idea with folks that can make it happen. For those craving the “do-it-yourself” approach, Sherbeyn is happy to offer guidance.

Self taught, Sherbeyn attributes much of his success to “country common sense.”

In addition to landscape work, Sherbeyn’s also offers complete lawn and maintenance packages

For Sherbeyn, winning this national award is triply satisfying as it involves two Culpeper businesses and three Culpeper families who can share in the recognition.
