Culpeper police officer injured in traffic accident

A 23-year-old Culpeper resident has been charged following a traffic accident Thursday afternoon about 4 p.m. on North Main Street, resulting in injuries to Culpeper police motorcycle officer Mike Grant, Sr.

Virginia State Police charged Sergio Vasquez Lopez with failure to yield right-of-way and no operatorâ??s license.

Lopez was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound in the 700 block of North Main Street. He was making a left turn into a residential driveway, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.

Grant, 56, was operating a 2006 Harley Davidson Roadster police motorcycle southbound in the right lane.

A vehicle in the left southbound lane stopped to allow Lopez to turn, but Grant, travelling in the adjacent southbound lane, struck the right rear corner of the turning pickup truck.

Police blocked off traffic on North Main Street near Baby Jimâ??s restaurant, while volunteers from Salem Volunteer Fire and Rescue transported Grant to U.Va. Culpeper Hospital, where he was being treated for what is believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

Trooper I. R. Ewing investigated the accident.
