VDOT Alert (Monday morning, Oct. 27, 9 a.m.: Route 522 closed in Rappahannock County

CULPEPER â?? An overturned tractor-trailer is blocking traffic in both directions on Route 522 (Sperryville Pike) just south of the intersection of Route 604 (Round Hill Road) in the Boston area of Rappahannock County.

The truck was hauling fuel, which is currently leaking onto the roadway. A hazardous materials team has been dispatched to the scene. The road closure is likely to extend until afternoon.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is in the process of setting up a detour for passenger vehicles, which will direct northbound traffic onto Route 707 (Slate Mills Road), then to Route 604 and back to Route 522. Southbound traffic will reverse the detour.

Since the local detour is not suitable for large vehicles, trucks coming from the south are advised to use Route 229 (Rixeyville Road) north from Culpeper to Clevengers Corner, then take Route 211 (Lee Highway) west to Route 522. Southbound trucks would reverse this route.

Message boards will be in place to provide notification of the closure and detour routes.
