Culpeper police department investigating a shooting Saturday in Yowell Meadow Park

The Culpeper Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Yowell Meadow Park. The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m.

Immediately after the shooting, the Culpeper Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls from witness[es] who heard gunshots coming from the park. Officers responded to the park and observed one victim lying on the ground suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim, a 29-year-old male, was transported via ambulance to Culpeper Regional Hospital, and was subsequently flown to INOVA Fairfax hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Officers, along with deputies from the Culpeper County Sheriffâ??s Office, began an immediate search for a suspect in the area of Yowell Meadow Park as the subject fled on foot. Officers apprehended the suspect coming out of a residence adjacent to Yowell Meadow Park minutes after the shooting.

Detectives from the Culpeper Police Department were called to the scene for investigation and crime scene processing. The residence that Mr. Jackson was apprehended at was searched and a handgun was recovered from that search late last night.

The suspect was identified as Christopher H. Jackson, age 31, of the 1800 block of Belle Avenue in Culpeper.

Based upon the investigation, Mr. Jackson has been charged with: Malicious Wounding, Discharging a Firearm in a Public Place, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Use of a Firearm after being a Convicted Felon, and Unlawful Entry into a Residence. All of these charges are felonies. Mr. Jackson is currently being held in the Culpeper County Jail without bond.

Officers from the Culpeper Police Department are back at the crime scene today [Sunday] and this is still an active, on-going investigation.
