Choose your cause, give and win for the community

May 6 is Give Local Piedmont Day fund raising event

May 6 is election day and voters will decide who is going to fill at-large seats on the town council as well as the mayor’s seat.

It also marks a unique and inaugural happening in Culpeper worth noting.

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation is sponsoring Give Local Piedmont Day.

So, what is this? It’s about giving to non-profits, many of whom rely heavily on private donations.

But, it’s giving with a pro-active and competitive component. Those non-profits who help themselves by energizing their donor base are in line for hourly prizes, special awards and matching funds. All contributions made online will be eligible for a 3 percent bonus match.

For example, one of Culpeper’s non-profits that is participating in Give Local Piedmont is the Soap Box Derby of Culpeper. Another is Healthy Culpeper and another is the Free Clinic of Culpeper.

You decide that you’re going to donate $10 to the Free Clinic of Culpeper. You can do this online that day.

Each hour during the contest period a Golden Ticket winner will be randomly chosen from the list of organizations that have received donations during that hour.

So, your $10 donation to the Free Clinic could escalate to $510 if the Free Clinic is drawn.

Now, let’s suppose that you rally a lot of your friends to support the Free Clinic of Culpeper. You know it is a good and worthy service and an asset to the community. During the contest period there are Power Hours. These are times when organizations that have raised the highest dollar amount within that hour are given a $750 prize.

Making it happen

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation serves a four county area – Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock.

Executive Director Cole Johnson has been rallying non-profits in those counties to sign on to be a part of this online giving day which is part of Give Local America. Commemorating 100 years of community foundations, the event is taking place on May 6 across the nation.

“I’m excited,” said Johnson who was able to sign on a good number of Culpeper’s non-profits.

“This is about giving, but it’s a contest…it’s a way for non-profits to rally their supporters and win extra money for their organizations…it’s about winning for their cause.”

Johnson also stressed that it’s about “engagement” and “inspiration.”

“Stopping by with a check or clicking online for your favorite non-profit will make a difference.”

There are more than 100 non-profits participating in the four county area during this 24-hour period.

For as little as $10 any one can be a philanthropist and your giving dollars are staying local.

While new to Culpeper, this event is not new to the nation. Last September, Richmond held their third annual Give Local event and raised $1.5 million from more than 18,000 gifts.

The non-profits serve a wide range of causes including education, the arts, environment, medical and dental care, mental health, animals and more.

Give Local Piedmont is a fund raising event to be sure. But, it’s also a way to show your support in a fun and friendly competitive way.

The State Theatre will serve as event headquarters on May 6 open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. During that time, you can stop by, drop off a donation or use a provided computer to click on your donation. Or, you can opt to do it all from the comfort of your home computer.

There is a countdown clock to May 6 when the giving will begin during a 24-hour period.

Perhaps because the program is in its debut year and a new concept for this area, there were some non-profits that were approached that either let the deadline for registration slip or decided not to participate.

Registration is closed for non-profits to sign up but those registered stand to gain.

Excitement is already building as many of these non-profits are sending out group emails, phoning friends and local businesses encouraging them to support their cause in this fun and unique way.
