Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Lent is the forty day period before the celebration of Easter. It is a time when Christians traditionally have reflected on the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and what that means in their own lives. Over the centuries many churches and traditions have honored Lent as a time of fasting, penance, and alms-giving.
Hopewell United Methodist Church will hold a special evening service on Ash Wednesday, March 5th, at 7:00 p.m. Following a practice that dates back over one thousand years, mourning for the suffering of Jesus, and general penance for the community will be symbolized by the imposition of ashes on the foreheads of worshipers. Pastor Stan Mulford and the people of Hopewell United Methodist Church invite the community to gather in worship.
Services and activities at the church are open to all. Hopewell United Methodist Church is located in Lignum, twelve miles east of Culpeper, seven miles west of Lake of the Woods. The church is off of Highway 3, one half mile east of the Lignum Post Office at 23557 Lignum Road. Ample free parking is available.
