Food Closet shares needs

Food Closet “Needs of the Week”: Hand soap, canned meat, mashed potatoes (13 oz.). There were 51 families helped and 1,593 meals were handed out last week. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Phone: 540-825-1177.

DMV posts holiday closings

All Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) full-service customer service centers will be closed on Jan. 1, 2014 for the New Years holiday.

Bluegrass season announced

The Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band returns to the Theatre at Washington to open the new year and the new season at the Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. Band members are Paul Fincham who was raised in Rappahannock and now resides in Madison County, Larry Haynes, Bob Cook, Buck Morris and Steve Lamb. The Blue Ridge Chorale starts new season

The Blue Ridge Chorale will start its new season on Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Rehearsals will be held each Monday evening at the Open Door Baptist Church, 754 Germanna Hwy. Culpeper, VA. Concerts will be in late April or early May. We are a non-affiliated, not for profit community chorale. Republican Women host Chili Festival

E. W. Jackson will be the guest speaker at the Madison County Republican Women’s 14th Annual Chili Festival on Jan. 21. The event will be held at the Madison Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 1236 Fishback Road, Madison , VA 22727 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Come and enjoy delicious chili with all the fixin’s. Extension seeks volunteers for program

The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (EMGV) training program is offered through Virginia Cooperative Extension to train volunteers in basic horticulture to serve the community. The training program in basic horticulture will be held weekly on Tuesdays, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 4, 2014 through mid-April. The program is free, but you are requested to sign up by calling or emailing Debbie Dillion at 540-727-3435 ext. 355 or ddillion@vt.edu. NPBA offers beekeeping course

The Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association (NPBA) announces their spring 2014 seven-week course for those wishing to begin keeping honey bees. Classes begin on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. Verdun Adventure Bound, 17044 Adventure Bound Trail, Rixeyville, VA 22737. The class “Meet-and-Greet” event for registered students is held Sunday, Feb. 2 at Verdun from 2 to 4 p.m. Texts, handouts and a one-year membership in NPBA are included in the course fee of $100 per person or family.
