James Morrison, 47, of Philadelphia, was operating a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle heading south on Madison Road with about seven other Blue Knights from Pennsylvania.
About 12:30 p.m., a 2008 Ford pickup truck driven by an 84-year-old Sperryville man allegedly pulled out of Oaklawn Drive on Madison Road into the path of Morrisonâs motorcycle, which was in the lane closest to the median. The motorcycle never struck the truck.
Morrison apparently fishtailed, lost control and rolled several times before being ejected from the motorcycle.
He was taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital for treatment where he died about 2 p.m.
The Blue Knights have been holding its annual rally in Culpeper for more than 30 years.
Morrison was an active duty police officer with a university in Pennsylvania and also a reserve member of a Military police unit, according to a member of the Blue Knights.
Town public works crews blocked off streets as the police departmentâs accident reconstruction team, along with assistance from Virginia State Police, took measurements and collected evidence.
Culpeper County Sheriffâs Office deputies assisted with traffic control as police closed the southbound lane of Madison Road to investigate the crash.
No charges have been placed at this time and the accident remains under investigation by Sgt. Andy Berry.
